Before Thor Bøgelund graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1914, he had previously trained as a journeyman painter. Around 1910 he was a member of the modernist circle in the Young Art (Ung Kunst) group, and later set the tone in Danish advertising posters, where the simple, strong colours and sober expressions of German advertising aesthetics influenced him. His poster designs are simple and monumental. When working on posters, he collaborated closely with the predominant Danish lithographic press, Andreassen and Lachmann. He was closely affiliated from 1911–1958 with Tivoli in Copenhagen, and produced many Tivoli posters.
