For most of his career, Martinus Hougaard, also known as Tinus, was affiliated with the Social Democratic press, and from the 1920s he worked for the Aarhus newspaper, Demokraten, as a draughtsman and art critic. During World War II, Martinus Hougaard carried on his own bitter fight against Nazism. He illustrated a large number of books and leaflets. In the field of posters, he is best known for his advertisements for various products, normally with quite simple lines, and often with humour.
