Although Marlie (christened Amelie Marie) Brande was the child of Danish parents, she was born in Brooklyn, USA. She took her training in Copenhagen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where she was admitted in 1929 after taking lessons in drawing at Marie Wandel’s and later at Emil Rannow’s art schools. Later she worked as a draughtsman, illustrator and author. In her posters she concentrated most on welfare, health, hygiene and sport. The portraits and human figures on the posters show Marlie Brande’s great social empathy with those on the lower levels of society, sharply portrayed, but at the same time with a gentle touch.
