Henry Heerup

4.11.1907 – 30.5.1993

Before beginning his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Henry Heerup had served apprenticeships as a stonemason, a bronze caster, a sign painter and a lithographer.  His wide-ranging talent also took in posters, where he focused on tourism, charity or company advertising. Henry Heerup’s talent was also noticed abroad, and he has exhibited in Paris, New York, Amsterdam and Venice.

His imagery is gentle, imaginative and luxuriant. His world is full of hearts and flowing curves, and populated with elves, birds and babies. His motifs are complete small-scale narratives with a wealth of symbols.
