Helge Refn set off for Paris in 1928, saying he intended to shake off the “Nordic heaviness and lack of elegance”. There can be no question of his success. He stayed until 1932, and in that period acquired new skills through his contact with the legendary cubist, Fernand Léger (1881-1955) and theatre director, Louis Jouvet (1887-1951). Helge Refn described himself as a theatre painter, and his best known posters were also to be found in the world of the theatre. They are distinguished by an elegant style, a lively imagination and clear, light colours.
