Erik Stockmarr’s name is most commonly associated with circus posters. He was passionately fond of the circus, and was in fact married to a circus artiste. He learned to draw and paint at a private art school. He made his breakthrough as a poster artist in the 1930s, when he worked on tourist and advertising posters. From the 1950s onwards, he drew posters for Cirkus Louis, Cirkus Schumann and Cirkus Benneweis among others. Stockmarr’s simplified expression and humorous touch helped to revitalise circus posters. His characteristic poster style is expressive, with movement in the motifs and a great love of colour.
