Before Erik Ludvig Henningsen graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, he was apprenticed as a decoration painter. His naturalist paintings and book illustrations show especially the lives of ordinary people in Denmark, and this special fondness for everyday situations is exemplified in his most famous poster of the sweating Thirsty Man for Tuborg. The poster was drawn for a competition, held by Tuborg in 1900, to produce a “decorative advertising poster”. Although another artist carried off the first prize, it was Erik Henningsen's poster that went into production.
