After Axel Mathiesen had trained as a journeyman painter, he spent three years travelling and working in Europe. On his return to Denmark, he began working in 1904 as a book illustrator, as a humorous cartoonist for Svikmøllen, and as a commercial artist. The colourful dust covers of books such as Tarzan of the Apes and the series of Flemming books are his artwork. In the field of posters, he concentrated especially on posters for the Scout movement. Axel Mathiesen’s style is natural, but at the same time dynamic and centred on the figures.
